Business EV charging in Basildon: demand and site decisions
Basildon had 120 public chargers in the July snapshot [S1]. Its population-based provision was below the regional comparator, but that alone does not establish demand at your premises. Separate staff, fleet and public charging needs, then check supply and parking before comparing fully funded, part funded and self funded offers. Checked October 2026.
Where are EV charging points in Basildon?
Use a current map to inspect chargers near your premises, then visit the competing parking locations. Record opening hours, walking routes, restrictions and whether the charger is available to your intended users. A charging pin on a map is not a description of the customer experience.
Essex County Council’s climate action plan records workplace charging at Ely House in Basildon, for its employees, visitors, members and suppliers [S10]. That is a useful local distinction: workplace charging can serve an identified group, while a public destination site must attract drivers who have other choices. The council example is not evidence of commercial earnings or general access to that building.
For your own site, decide which group you intend to serve before asking for equipment prices. Mixing fleet charging and public access without a timetable can produce a proposal that meets neither need.
How many public chargers does Basildon have?
The 1 July 2026 snapshot includes 51 rapid-or-above chargers in Basildon [S1].
| Area | Public chargers | Per 100,000 people | Rapid or above per 100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basildon | 120 | 62.0 | 26.3 |
| East of England | 9,880 | 150.2 | 48.8 |
| UK | 121,171 | 174.9 | 41.7 |
Both Basildon rates fall below the regional and UK comparisons [S1], [S3]. That suggests a question for your survey, not a conclusion that any available bay will earn money. Check whether nearby provision matches the length and purpose of visits to your premises.
The weighted comparators come from summing council counts and implied populations. For each council, population is approximated as public chargers ÷ published chargers per 100,000 × 100,000. Divide the aggregate counts by aggregate population and multiply by 100,000. The rounded outputs agree with DfT’s published rates [S3]. The East of England page shows every council, so you can inspect differences rather than relying on a regional average.
How many electric vehicles are there in Basildon?
The 2026 Q2 vehicle dataset records 9,457 plug-in vehicles, including 4,279 battery electric vehicles [S2]. They are counted by keeper location. The figures cannot tell you how many vehicles arrive during your opening hours, or whether a visiting driver needs to charge.
For a workplace, survey employees’ arrival and departure times. For a depot, use actual vehicle energy needs and return schedules. For a customer car park, ask whether people would charge during their existing visit. These are separate research tasks; do not use the district vehicle total as a utilisation forecast.
How much is EV charger installation?
Request an itemised commercial quote after the electrical survey. Ask it to separate equipment, cable routes, groundwork, connection changes and commissioning from recurring charges. We have not verified a Basildon commercial installation price range, so this page does not substitute a domestic price for one.
Confirm your distribution network operator (DNO), which manages the electricity network, using UK Power Networks’ regional coverage map and address checker [S4]. Ask the installer to record the supply assessment and any unresolved connection work in writing.
Kilowatts (kW) measure power; kilowatt hours (kWh) measure energy. Compare proposed energy delivery with the time your vehicles will actually remain parked. Ask whether managed charging or a staged installation can meet that timetable, and ask for the limitations to be explained.
Are EV charging stations profitable?
Prepare separate cases for employee provision, fleet operation and public charging. An employee benefit budget is not the same as a public charging income forecast. Use the offices and workplaces guide, fleets and depots guide or manufacturing and industrial guide to define the service you want.
Compare the funding routes on the same assumptions:
| Route | What to request |
|---|---|
| fully funded | Annual host share, ownership, operating duties and agreement term |
| part funded | Host capital, annual net share, return on investment and payback in years |
| self funded | Full capital, annual income after all costs and payback in years |
The regional illustration shows low, middle and high use with arithmetic. It is not an estimate for your site. Include lost parking income, lease exit provisions, liability and equipment removal in your assessment. Ask your accountant to review tax and VAT treatment, and your solicitor to review the agreement.
What business EV charging grant is available?
The Workplace Charging Scheme can support eligible workplace installations up to 75% of cost, capped at £500 per socket and 40 sockets across an applicant’s sites. The scheme closes on 31 March 2027 [S5]. Check your site and intended use through the WCS guide before treating support as secured.
If you plan public access, ask who will discharge the relevant duties under the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 [S6]. Identify the operator, rather than assuming the landowner and operator are the same. Check with your solicitor. Ask separately about any business rates implications.

Common questions
Is EV charging free?
You choose whether to subsidise charging. If you charge drivers, explain parking and energy charges separately.
Do you pay for EV charging?
A driver may pay an energy tariff and a parking fee. Check the displayed terms before charging.
How much did the chargers cost you please?
Ask for a site survey and an itemised quote. A domestic installation price is not a commercial site budget.
How do I create a workplace charging policy?
Set access, charging windows, prices and a process for moving vehicles. Agree who handles disputes.
How do you manage staff with company EVs?
Start with vehicle return times and energy needed before departure. Separate staff charging from fleet priorities.
Can I get a grant for electric car charger?
Check the Workplace Charging Scheme eligibility rather than assuming every customer charging site qualifies. [S5]
