Business EV charging in the South West: demand and funding
The South West council dataset totals 9,232 public chargers at July 2026 [S1]. Your charging proposal needs a site survey and a demand estimate that allows for quieter trading periods. Compare fully funded host income with the investment and payback under part funded or self funded arrangements, then confirm the electricity connection and access terms. Checked October 2026.
How much EV charging does the South West have?
The council data totals 9,232 public chargers, including 2,913 rapid-or-above chargers, at 1 July 2026 [S1]. Its vehicle records total 269,587 licensed plug-in vehicles at the end of Q2 2026 [S2]. These are snapshots of infrastructure and keeper registrations, rather than charging sales at your site.
The sum includes each council record tagged South West once: Bath and North East Somerset; Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole; Bristol; Cheltenham; Cornwall; Cotswold; Dorset; East Devon; Exeter; Forest of Dean; Gloucester; Isles of Scilly; Mid Devon; North Devon; North Somerset; Plymouth; Somerset; South Gloucestershire; South Hams; Stroud; Swindon; Teignbridge; Tewkesbury; Torbay; Torridge; West Devon; and Wiltshire [S1], [S2].
County and district totals are not added together. Do not average council rates or assume that public devices equal locations. Keeper-address vehicle geography can also differ from where a fleet operates [S1], [S2]. Use the regional data guide to frame your own catchment survey.
Where could charging serve visitors to your business?
VisitEngland lists partnerships covering Cotswolds Plus, Visit West, Devon and partners, Somerset and Exmoor, Dorset and Wiltshire [S9]. Request destination evidence for your visitor market, then compare it with arrivals at your own premises. Do not turn destination visitor counts into assumed charging customers.
For a hotel or holiday park, record car arrivals, occupied parking spaces and overnight charging requests by month. For a visitor attraction, inspect how long customers stay and whether queues would block the entrance. A farm shop should distinguish regular shoppers from people stopping mainly to charge.
Test a quiet trading period as well as peak days. Ask whether winter opening hours permit public access and who will answer drivers when reception is closed. Price charging and overnight parking clearly before booking; write an overstay policy that guests can follow without an unexpected late-night vehicle move.
Which network handles the electricity connection?
National Grid Electricity Distribution covers the South West [S6]. SSEN Distribution’s southern territory also includes places within this region, including Swindon and Bournemouth [S7]. Identify your distribution network operator (DNO), which manages local electricity cables, for the actual premises.
Request an assessment using building demand and charging demand together. Ask for cable routes, excavation, load management and network work to be priced separately. A rural address alone does not establish the connection cost or timetable. Use the DNO application guide when preparing your supply information.
For solar photovoltaic panels and battery storage, compare generation with monthly opening hours and vehicle arrival times. Ask for separate roof, fire-safety, planning and export checks. A combined proposal should show which equipment serves which load; avoid paying for storage solely because it appears in a package.
What could seasonal charging cost and earn?
Under fully funded, a provider pays, owns and operates while you provide the site. Part funded shares capital and income. Self funded leaves you paying for the equipment and retaining net operating income. Ask each bidder to use the same trading calendar when comparing proposals.
This is an illustration, not a quote. All figures are assumptions, not measured regional demand or prices. kW means kilowatts of power; kWh means kilowatt-hours of energy. The shorter trading year is an example to test, rather than a description of every South West business.
| Assumed input | Value |
|---|---|
| Equipment | Four 7 kW sockets |
| Whole-site sessions/open day, low / mid / high | 1 / 2 / 5 |
| Energy/session; open days/year | 12 kWh; 300 |
| Driver tariff; energy cost | £0.60/kWh; £0.25/kWh |
| Annual software and maintenance | £600 |
| Capital excluding major grid works | £8,000–£12,000 |
| Fully funded host share | 10% of sales; provider pays operating costs |
| Part funded host capital; net share | £4,000–£6,000; 50% |
| Self funded host capital; net share | £8,000–£12,000; 100% |
| Annual result | Low | Mid | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy sold, kWh | 3,600 | 7,200 | 18,000 |
| Fully funded host income | £216 | £432 | £1,080 |
| Part funded net host income | £330 | £960 | £2,850 |
| Self funded net host income | £660 | £1,920 | £5,700 |
| Simple ROI, part funded and self funded | 5.5–8.3% | 16.0–24.0% | 47.5–71.3% |
| Simple payback, part funded and self funded | 12.1–18.2 years | 4.2–6.3 years | 1.4–2.1 years |
Annual energy = sessions × 12 × 300; sales = energy × £0.60; operating net = energy × (£0.60 − £0.25) − £600. Fully funded income = sales × 10%; part funded income = operating net × 50%. ROI = annual host net ÷ capital × 100; payback = capital ÷ annual host net. Proportional contributions give matching returns here. These figures exclude VAT, tax, finance, charging losses, replacements and additional property costs. The low-use case needs particular scrutiny because its simple payback extends far beyond the initial installation. Check costs with your accountant and rerun your own income and payback calculation.
Which regional grants and public charging rules apply?
The South West LEVI allocation is £40,102,000 [S8]. LEVI supports council-led charging for residents without off-street parking [S10]. Ask your council what is planned nearby before forecasting public sales.
WCS offers up to £500 per eligible socket through 31 March 2027 [S3]. Public tariffs must show pence per kWh [S4]. Qualifying chargepoints have a 100% first-year Corporation Tax allowance through 31 March 2027 [S5]; check with your accountant. Keep grants and tax deductions separate in your forecast.
Ask your solicitor to check planning and landlord permissions, lease length, winter access, redevelopment and exit terms. Allocate liability, insurance, business rates, equipment removal and reinstatement in writing.
What should you do next?
Prepare your postcode, parking plan, supply details and monthly demand assumptions. Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. We name the proposed partner and disclose any shareholding our owner holds in it before sharing details. Read how we work, then get matched with an installer that covers your area.
