Business EV charging in South Norfolk: what should your site check?
South Norfolk had 195 public chargers on 1 July 2026 [S1]. Your business should assess its own parking and users rather than infer demand from the district total. Take care with local grant searches: an application page can remain online after its funding round closes. Check the scheme dates and electricity connection before budgeting. Checked October 2026.
How much public EV charging is there in South Norfolk?
South Norfolk’s total public charger rate is below the East of England and UK comparisons. Its rapid-or-above rate is also below both. This is background for a site assessment, not proof that any particular car park can attract paying sessions or support a funded operating contract. [S1]
| Geography | Public chargers | Public per 100,000 | Rapid or above per 100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Norfolk | 195 | 131.4 | 21.6 |
| East of England | 9,880 | 150.2 | 48.8 |
| UK | 121,171 | 174.9 | 41.7 |
South Norfolk has 32 rapid-or-above chargers in this snapshot. [S1] Rates are per 100,000 residents, for 1 July 2026. Regional and UK figures are calculated from the supplied council dataset: infer each population as public chargers × 100,000 ÷ the published local rate, sum those populations, then divide the total chargers by that population and multiply by 100,000. Rounded input rates make these aggregate comparisons approximate. Do not average the council rates. [S1]
The district recorded 5,265 plug-in vehicles, including 3,640 battery electric vehicles, at the end of 2026 Q2. These are keeper-address registrations, not a count of users passing your entrance. [S2] Use the East of England overview to compare neighbouring councils without treating their boundaries as your customers’ travel boundaries.
Which local EV charging grants should you check carefully?
South Norfolk’s application page still links to its Electric Vehicle Chargepoints and Solar PV Grant guidance. [S9] The guidance describes a community-focused round that closed on 29 November 2024. It is not evidence of an open business grant today. Do not copy an old award amount into an installation budget. [S3]
The published round combined community charging and solar aims, and excluded battery storage. Those were conditions of that round; they do not describe current commercial offers or prove that a new round has the same terms. [S3] If your site is a community building, ask the council for the current eligibility, budget and closing date in writing before comparing it with national support.
This distinction matters when searching for charging near Norwich. Start with your actual South Norfolk site and the applicant that owns or controls it. A nearby city’s search results, or a form hosted on a shared council website, do not establish that your business can claim a particular award.
Where could your South Norfolk site add useful charging?
Build the local evidence from your users. Record requests from staff, company vehicles, visitors or community groups separately. Note their parking time and whether they can access the bays outside your usual opening hours. Then inspect nearby public alternatives at the times those users need them.
Use farms and rural businesses for operational vehicle needs, pubs, restaurants and cafés for a meal stop, or community and public sites for shared buildings. These are different uses to test, rather than interchangeable reasons to install equipment.
For a community or hospitality site, decide who takes priority when an event fills the car park. For an operational site, keep public visitors away from loading and vehicle movements in the proposed drawing. Record which bays you can commit throughout the agreement, including any seasonal or event restrictions.
What should installation and national funding checks cover?
UK Power Networks is the area’s distribution network operator (DNO); confirm the address using its coverage map and checker. [S4] A kilowatt (kW) measures power; a kilowatt hour (kWh) measures energy delivered.
Give the surveyor supply information, a parking drawing and your building’s operating pattern. Ask for separate equipment, excavation, cable and connection prices. Request an explanation of how charging and existing building loads would be managed together. Keep land permissions and planning checks explicit in the proposal.
WCS offers eligible applicants up to £500 per socket. [S5] It runs until 31 March 2027. [S8] Read the Workplace Charging Scheme guide before assuming public visitor bays meet workplace eligibility.
Compare fully funded, part funded and self funded offers against the same layout. Fully funded means the provider pays, owns and operates the equipment while you provide space and receive an agreed share. Part funded shares the capital cost. Self funded means you buy the equipment and retain income after operating costs.
Request yearly host income for fully funded offers. For part funded and self funded offers, request yearly net income, simple return on investment and payback years under low, middle and high use. Require the tariff, electricity price, maintenance, software, capital and revenue-share assumptions. Local vehicle totals cannot supply those inputs. Ask who pays for damage, insurance and business rates, and have your solicitor review lease length, redevelopment, termination and removal terms.
HMRC’s chargepoint first-year allowance extension runs through March 2027 for Corporation Tax and April 2027 for Income Tax. Check with your accountant before including tax relief. [S7]
Next step
For public bays, regulation 11 requires the energy price in pence per kWh. Check the operating brief with your solicitor. [S6]
Bring your postcode, parking sketch, opening hours and intended users, then get matched with an installer that covers your area. Describe any landlord restrictions and whether you want public charging, staff charging or both. Read how we work before sharing your details.
Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. Before passing on your details, we name the proposed partner and disclose any shareholding our owner holds in it.
Common questions
Is the South Norfolk EV and solar application page evidence of an open grant?
No. Its linked guidance gives a closing date of 29 November 2024. Obtain current round details from the council before assigning funding to your budget. [S3]
Was the local community scheme open to ordinary trading businesses?
The cited round targeted town and parish councils and community groups. Do not treat a community grant as business eligibility simply because your premises are in the district. [S3]
How should an installation quote account for grant support?
Show eligible purchase and installation items before deducting WCS support. Its per-socket cap does not mean all project costs or all parking uses qualify. [S5]
Can company EVs and staff share WCS-funded chargers?
Eligible business applications can cover staff and fleet parking. List both user groups and how they access the site when preparing your application. [S5]
How should a workplace share chargers with other users?
First decide whether charging stays workplace-only or becomes public. Regulation 3 distinguishes those uses; then write booking and vehicle-moving rules for the chosen audience. Check with your solicitor. [S6]
