Business EV charging in Norwich: public or workplace charging?

Norwich had 289 public chargers on 1 July 2026 [S1]. City-wide provision does not tell you whether your parking suits customers, staff or company vehicles. Check competing access hours and your users' parking time, then prepare a connection and installation brief. Treat workplace charging and customer charging as separate operating decisions. Checked October 2026.

How much public EV charging does Norwich have?

Norwich’s public charger rate is above the East of England and UK comparisons. Its rapid-or-above rate is above the UK figure but below the regional figure. That is a useful distinction when assessing what another site would add; it does not establish demand at an individual car park. [S1]

Geography Public chargers Public per 100,000 Rapid or above per 100,000
Norwich 289 196.4 41.4
East of England 9,880 150.2 48.8
UK 121,171 174.9 41.7

Norwich has 61 rapid-or-above chargers in this snapshot. [S1] Rates are per 100,000 residents, for 1 July 2026. Regional and UK figures are calculated from the supplied council dataset: infer each population as public chargers × 100,000 ÷ the published local rate, sum those populations, then divide the total chargers by that population and multiply by 100,000. Rounded input rates make these aggregate comparisons approximate. Do not average the council rates. [S1]

At the end of 2026 Q2, Norwich recorded 2,525 plug-in vehicles, including 1,767 battery electric vehicles. Counts follow the registered keeper’s address, so they do not measure commuting or shopping trips into the city. [S2] Read the East of England overview before comparing neighbouring catchments.

Where could your Norwich city-centre site add something useful?

Norwich City Council directs drivers to charging-location maps and identifies charging at the UEA Enterprise Centre. Its climate programme also includes expanding EV charging with Norfolk County Council. These are different parts of the local picture: a listed facility and an ongoing policy direction, rather than a forecast for your business. [S3] [S9]

For customer parking, assess the whole visit. Walk the route from the proposed bay to your entrance, test evening access and write down any barrier or parking-payment steps. Compare your opening hours with alternatives around the actual site. A driver choosing somewhere to spend time needs more than a pin showing an electrical connection.

Use retail charging for shopping visits and car parks for access, pricing and turnover questions. For employees staying through a shift, use offices and workplaces. Do not count the same parking bay as available to customers and staff at the same time in your demand estimate.

Ask staff how often they would use charging and what time their cars leave. For customers, record parking duration and existing requests. Keep those observations separate from assumptions about drivers simply passing through Norwich. Your initial specification should say which audience takes priority when the car park is busy.

What should EV charger installation in Norwich include?

UK Power Networks covers the area as distribution network operator (DNO); use its map and address checker for your supply. [S4] A kilowatt (kW) measures power; a kilowatt hour (kWh) measures energy.

Prepare the meter details, building demand information and a marked parking plan. Ask installers to price cable routing, groundworks and any connection change separately. Have them show how charging would operate while the building is busiest. Compare equipment on usable parking time and delivered energy, rather than on its headline power alone.

Before proceeding, identify who can authorise the works, where excavation crosses shared land and how people reach your entrance around charging vehicles. Ask for the survey’s assumptions in writing. Keep planning and land permissions as explicit checks with the relevant authority and your solicitor, rather than assuming an existing car park settles them.

Which EV charging grants can your Norwich business consider?

WCS offers eligible applicants up to £500 per socket. [S5] The current scheme runs until 31 March 2027. [S8] Read the Workplace Charging Scheme guide and establish whether your parking serves qualifying users before applying. Do not attach a workplace grant to a customer-only proposal without checking its eligibility.

Compare fully funded, part funded and self funded offers against the same layout. Fully funded means the provider pays, owns and operates the equipment while you provide space and receive an agreed share. Part funded shares the capital cost. Self funded means you buy the equipment and retain income after operating costs.

Request yearly host income for fully funded offers. For part funded and self funded offers, request yearly net income, simple return on investment and payback years under low, middle and high use. Require the tariff, electricity price, maintenance, software, capital and revenue-share assumptions. Local vehicle totals cannot supply those inputs. Ask who pays for damage, insurance and business rates, and have your solicitor review lease length, redevelopment, termination and removal terms.

The chargepoint first-year allowance extension covers Corporation Tax through March 2027 and Income Tax through April 2027. Check with your accountant before including tax relief. [S7]

Next step

For public bays, regulation 11 requires the energy price in pence per kWh. Check the operating brief with your solicitor. [S6]

Bring your postcode, parking sketch, opening hours and intended users, then get matched with an installer that covers your area. Describe any landlord restrictions and whether you want public charging, staff charging or both. Read how we work before sharing your details.

Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. Before passing on your details, we name the proposed partner and disclose any shareholding our owner holds in it.

Common questions

Does Norwich City Council identify a rapid charging location?

Its electric-vehicles page identifies a 50 kW charger at the UEA Enterprise Centre car park. Check current access before relying on it as a competitor or fallback. [S3]

Does free EV charging also mean free parking?

Do not combine the two prices. For public charging, regulation 11 requires a clear energy price in pence per kilowatt hour; check parking conditions separately with the landowner. Check with your solicitor. [S6]

How much should an installation quote show?

Ask for purchase and installation costs separately. WCS supports eligible costs within a per-socket cap, so identify the qualifying items before deducting a grant from your budget. [S5]

Can you combine staff and company-vehicle charging?

WCS permits staff and fleet charging for eligible business applicants. List the intended users and parking arrangements in the application, rather than relying on a general customer-parking description. [S5]

What should a workplace bay-sharing policy specify?

First distinguish staff-only access from customer access. Regulation 3 treats them differently; then document booking, moving cars and fault reporting for your chosen users. Check with your solicitor. [S6]
