Business EV charging in Braintree: demand and site decisions

Braintree had 146 public chargers in the July snapshot [S1]. For a business car park, compare the charging need during a shopping visit with staff or overnight use before choosing equipment. The council's climate strategy supports expanding charging infrastructure, but that is not a forecast of your site's income. Checked October 2026.

Where are EV charging points in Braintree?

Start by separating the district total from the car parks your visitors would consider. Braintree District Council’s climate strategy identifies expansion of EV charging infrastructure as a priority [S11]. For a practical local check, its George Yard Multi-Storey listing includes electric car charging and says standard parking rates apply to the EV parking bay [S12].

That parking detail matters when you design your own service. Ask visitors about the combined cost of charging and parking, rather than comparing only the displayed energy tariff. Do not assume a nearby shopping destination offers free parking or free charging without checking the current terms.

Before commissioning equipment, walk the route from the proposed bay to your door. Note gates, delivery movements and the time people normally spend on site. These observations help you explain what a driver would receive by choosing your location.

How many public EV chargers are there in Braintree?

The snapshot dated 1 July 2026 includes 58 rapid-or-above chargers in the district [S1].

Area Public chargers Per 100,000 people Rapid or above per 100,000
Braintree 146 88.9 35.3
East of England 9,880 150.2 48.8
UK 121,171 174.9 41.7

The district falls below both comparison areas on both population-based measures [S1], [S3]. This is not proof that there is an unserved market outside your business. Check charger locations, access, parking limits and the type of visit each serves before describing a gap.

The comparison uses summed council counts rather than an average of council rates. We estimate population as chargers ÷ published chargers per 100,000 × 100,000, sum those populations, then calculate aggregate chargers ÷ aggregate population × 100,000. The rounded results match DfT’s regional and UK rates [S3]. See the East of England page for the council table.

How many electric vehicles are there in Braintree?

The 2026 Q2 vehicle dataset records 5,029 plug-in vehicles, including 3,125 battery electric vehicles [S2]. These vehicles are counted at keeper locations. They are not a measurement of shoppers, guests or staff arriving at your address.

Ask your regular customers whether charging would fit an existing visit. Record how long they park, how often they return and whether another charging location already meets their needs. For employees, ask about departure requirements. For a delivery fleet, measure energy needed between returns to base. Avoid combining these into a single assumed customer profile.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger?

Ask for an electrical survey before using a headline equipment price as your budget. Request separate allowances for cable routing, surfacing, connection work, payment arrangements, software and maintenance. No district-wide commercial installation price is verified here.

UK Power Networks’ map identifies the East of England electricity network area. Confirm your actual connection through its address checker [S4]. The distribution network operator (DNO) manages the local wires; it is separate from the installer you select. Ask the installer which connection matters remain unresolved.

Kilowatts (kW) measure power; kilowatt hours (kWh) measure energy delivered. Ask how much energy your proposed installation can provide during the parking time you have measured. A car park layout should also show accessible routes, loading areas, queues and the effect on ordinary bays.

Are EV charging stations profitable?

For a shopping site, first establish whether charging fits the visit rather than relying on extra spending. For an employer, decide whether charging is a service budget or a source of income. Use the retail guide, car parks guide and offices and workplaces guide to brief your survey.

Funding route Figure to compare
fully funded Annual income to the host and the exact revenue-share basis
part funded Host contribution, annual net share, simple ROI and payback in years
self funded Full investment, annual net income, simple ROI and payback in years

Return on investment (ROI) compares annual net income with your capital. The regional illustration sets out a low, middle and high use method. It is an assumed example, not a prediction for Braintree.

Ask whether revenue share is calculated before or after operating deductions. Identify lease length, bay restrictions, liability, rates responsibility and equipment removal. Check property and exit terms with your solicitor, and tax treatment with your accountant.

What business EV charging grant is available?

The Workplace Charging Scheme supports eligible costs up to 75%, capped at £500 per socket and 40 sockets across an applicant’s sites, with a closing date of 31 March 2027 [S5]. Check your use case in the WCS guide. Do not assume ordinary public shopping access meets workplace eligibility.

Public access needs a separate check against the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 [S6]. Ask the operator to explain its duties and check with your solicitor. If considering solar or batteries alongside charging, request a separate assessment of when energy is needed.

Next steps

Bring your postcode, parking sketch and measured visitor timetable to get matched with an installer that covers your area. Ask for the quote’s assumptions and outstanding checks to be visible.

Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. Before sharing your details, we name the proposed partner and disclose whether our owner holds shares in it.

Common questions

Is EV charging free?

Do not assume it is. George Yard's council listing states that standard parking rates apply to its EV bay. [S12]

Do you pay for EV charging?

A driver may pay an energy tariff and a parking fee. Check the displayed terms before charging.

How much did the chargers cost you please?

Ask for a site survey and an itemised quote. A domestic installation price is not a commercial site budget.

How do I create a workplace charging policy?

Set access, charging windows, prices and a process for moving vehicles. Agree who handles disputes.

How do you manage staff with company EVs?

Start with vehicle return times and energy needed before departure. Separate staff charging from fleet priorities.

Can I get a grant for electric car charger?

Check the Workplace Charging Scheme eligibility rather than assuming every customer charging site qualifies. [S5]
