Business EV charging in Ashfield: staff or customer bays?
Ashfield had 133 public chargers on 1 July 2026 [S1]. Its provision per resident was below the East Midlands and UK estimates, but this does not establish a gap at your premises. Separate staff charging from customer charging, measure parking duration and check your electricity supply before comparing funding proposals. Checked October 2026.
How does Ashfield’s public charging provision compare?
Ashfield had 133 public chargers, including 45 rapid or above, on 1 July 2026. [S1] Compare the council with the East Midlands and UK using the same date and population basis.
| Area | Public chargers per 100,000 people | Rapid or above per 100,000 people |
|---|---|---|
| Ashfield | 102.6 | 34.7 |
| East Midlands, estimate | 121.5 | 46.8 |
| UK, estimate | 174.9 | 41.7 |
The local rate is below both wider benchmarks for all chargers and for rapid provision. [S1] A lower rate does not show whether your visitors need charging during the hours your car park is open.
Rates are approximate calculations from the council records. For each council, infer population as public chargers × 100,000 ÷ its published rate. Sum those populations and charger counts, then divide totals and multiply by 100,000. Rounded input rates limit precision; these are not simple averages of council rates. [S1]
What does Ashfield’s electric vehicle count tell you?
There were 9,361 licensed plug-in vehicles in the 2026 Q2 record, including 5,711 battery electric vehicles. [S2] Do not interpret that stock as a customer count. A fleet’s keeper address can be an administrative office while its vehicles operate elsewhere. [S8] Ask staff about charging needs and record fleet arrival and departure times before commissioning a design.
Should your site prioritise workplace charging?
Ashfield’s published climate strategy identifies business travel, fleet electrification and employee commuting as transport opportunities. It specifically includes workplace charging among commuting measures. [S3] This supports asking a workplace question first; it does not prove that a particular employer needs public rapid bays.
For offices and workplaces, survey how many drivers lack another convenient place to charge and when they can move a vehicle. For manufacturing and industrial sites, compare shift handovers with parking pressure. For fleets and depots, define the energy needed before the next departure. These are assessment routes, rather than claims about local sector size.
A shared-bay policy should state eligible users, how a session starts, when a driver should move and who handles a fault. Test it against your working day: a policy that assumes staff can leave a production role at any moment may be impractical. Keep visitor spaces and fleet readiness visible in the same parking plan.
What will business charger installation require?
National Grid Electricity Distribution’s distribution map covers its East Midlands area and offers a full-postcode search. [S4] Confirm the distributor for the actual premises. The distribution network operator (DNO) is responsible for the local electricity network, rather than your retail electricity tariff.
Ask the surveyor to measure existing peak demand and propose a charging schedule within the available supply. Obtain separate prices for connection changes, cable routes, hardware and ongoing services. If solar or storage is also proposed, ask for separate costs and an explanation of when the vehicles would use that energy. Have your solicitor check consent, planning responsibilities and liability before the layout becomes a contract.
How should you compare charging costs and funding?
Request fully funded, part funded and self funded proposals against the same layout. For fully funded, compare annual host income and the definition of revenue share. For part funded and self funded, compare yearly net income, return on investment (ROI) and simple payback. The funding comparison explains the choices.
For a cost comparison, use sessions × kilowatt-hours (kWh, energy delivered) × driver price for sales. Deduct electricity, payment fees, software, maintenance, insurance and any rates before calling the remainder income. Kilowatts (kW) measure charger power. Ask for low, mid and high use cases, with the capital contribution and replacement costs visible. Local charger totals cannot supply those assumptions.
Which grants and public charging rules apply?
The Workplace Charging Scheme covers up to 75% of eligible purchase and installation cost, capped at £500 per socket, with funding until 31 March 2027. [S5] Check the workplace grant guide before assuming a customer bay qualifies.
A charger restricted to workplace users is treated differently from a customer car park in Regulation 3. [S6] Agree access and compliance duties in the operating proposal. If you buy qualifying equipment, first-year allowances may apply; check with your accountant. [S7]
For a funded proposal, have your solicitor review the occupied bays, contract term, revenue-share deductions, business rates, repair duties and exit or redevelopment clauses. Ask who restores the land if the equipment is removed. Avoid comparing an installation-only price with an offer that includes operating services.

Common questions
Can customer-only chargers count as public charging?
Yes. Regulation 3 includes car parks serving people buying goods or services. Agree the operating model and compliance responsibilities with your solicitor before opening the bays. [S6]
Can the displayed charging price rise during a session?
Regulation 11 says the displayed charging price must not increase once charging starts. Ask your installer how the payment system preserves the session price. [S6]
Is chargepoint tax relief a cash installation grant?
No. HMRC lists new, unused chargepoint equipment bought before April 2027 for first-year allowances. Relief deducts qualifying cost from taxable profits; check with your accountant. [S7]
Do registered electric vehicles show how many drivers will visit?
No. DfT uses keeper addresses, which can be fleet administration offices. Vehicles may operate elsewhere. Use visitor and staff surveys before forecasting charging sessions. [S8]
Can a tenant apply for workplace charging support?
The scheme permits applicants with landlord consent and dedicated off-road parking. Obtain consent and check the parking eligibility before applying; installation must follow voucher approval. [S5]
