Could EV charging earn income at your Northumberland site?
Northumberland had 790 public chargers on 1 July 2026 [S1]. That county total does not tell you whether customers will use your bays. Compare nearby alternatives, parking duration and your electricity supply before choosing fully funded, part funded or self funded charging. The illustration below shows how use changes host income and capital payback. Checked October 2026.
What does Northumberland’s charging network tell your business?
Northumberland had 790 public chargers, including 160 rapid chargers, on 1 July 2026. [S1] Its charger density exceeded the North East and UK comparisons. Investigate the parking places your customers use before proposing more charging.
| Geography | Public chargers per 100,000 people | Rapid chargers per 100,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Northumberland | 238.4 | 48.3 |
| North East | 150.2 | 37.1 |
| UK | 174.9 | 41.7 |
Comparisons are calculated from the retained DfT council dataset: inferred population = charger count ÷ published density × 100,000. Sum counts and inferred populations, then divide and multiply by 100,000. Rounded input densities make the regional and UK results approximate. [S1] Use local charging comparisons to frame your catchment review.
The 2026 Q2 vehicle snapshot records 10,799 plug-in vehicles, including 7,509 battery electric vehicles and 9,050 privately kept plug-ins. Those categories overlap. [S2] Registrations describe where vehicles are kept, not how many drivers will stop at your entrance. Neither dataset measures your visitors’ summer and winter charging demand.
Where could charging fit a Northumberland visit?
Visit Northumberland identifies the A1 as the county’s north–south route and the A69 as the route following Hadrian’s Wall between Newcastle and Carlisle. Its visitor guidance includes market towns and coastal destinations such as Alnwick, Hexham and Seahouses. [S4] Road access and visitor appeal suggest questions to test, not a charging income forecast.
For a hotel, record overnight parking and whether guests need access before reception opens. For a visitor attraction, compare time in the car park with the energy visitors request. A roadside café should separately count short stops.
Prepare individual catchment checks for Ashington, Blyth and Cramlington. Do not allocate county totals to these towns.
What could a small installation cost, earn and repay?
Consider a longer-stay visitor site with existing electrical capacity: an illustration, not a quote. Alternating current (AC) describes this charger type. Kilowatts (kW) measure power; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy. The published workplace benchmark is £1,400–£2,500 per 7 kW charger. [S9] Groundworks, cable runs and grid connection are extra. The wider commercial reference also identifies infrastructure as a separate cost driver. [S10]
| Input | Assumption unless sourced |
|---|---|
| Equipment | Two 7 kW AC chargers |
| Installed charger capital | £2,800–£5,000, using the per-unit benchmark [S9] |
| Low / mid / high use | 1 / 2 / 4 sessions daily across both chargers |
| Session energy and operating year | 12 kWh; 300 days |
| Driver price / purchased electricity | £0.50 / £0.25 per kWh, excluding VAT |
| Software and maintenance | £400 yearly |
| fully funded share | 10% of sales to host |
| part funded contribution and share | Host pays 50% of capital; receives 60% of surplus |
| self funded contribution and share | Host pays all capital; receives all surplus |
| Annual host outcome | Low use | Mid use | High use |
|---|---|---|---|
| fully funded income | £180 | £360 | £720 |
| part funded net income | £300 | £840 | £1,920 |
| part funded simple ROI | 12.0–21.4% | 33.6–60.0% | 76.8–137.1% |
| part funded payback, years | 4.7–8.3 | 1.7–3.0 | 0.7–1.3 |
| self funded net income | £500 | £1,400 | £3,200 |
| self funded simple ROI | 10.0–17.9% | 28.0–50.0% | 64.0–114.3% |
| self funded payback, years | 5.6–10.0 | 2.0–3.6 | 0.9–1.6 |
Sales = daily sessions × 12 × 300 × £0.50. Surplus = daily sessions × 12 × 300 × (£0.50 − £0.25) − £400. Return on investment (ROI) = annual host net ÷ host capital × 100; simple payback = host capital ÷ annual host net. Part funded host capital is £1,400–£2,500. Shares and usage are assumed commercial terms, not offers.
Under fully funded, the provider installs, owns and operates; you provide bays without charger capital expenditure. Part funded shares investment and operating surplus, with ownership agreed. Self funded leaves the investment and operating risk with you. The figures exclude grants, tax, finance, payment fees, losses, standing charges, rates, land rent and replacements. Add all extra capital before using the income and payback tool.
Which checks should come before a funding agreement?
Northumberland’s council approved its EV charging strategy in June 2022. Its subsequent tariff report explains that charging prices must account for maintenance as well as electricity, and records the difficulty of forecasting energy costs. [S3] This historical policy evidence is useful for budgeting; its old tariffs are not current prices.
The network coverage map identifies Northern Powergrid for North East England. [S5] Your distribution network operator (DNO) manages local electricity cables. Confirm your actual connection and available capacity before accepting the example’s existing-supply assumption. A coverage map cannot establish spare power.
Check eligibility for the Workplace Charging Scheme before deducting support from capital; public customer charging is not automatically eligible. [S6] HMRC describes chargepoint first-year allowance deadlines of 31 March 2027 for Corporation Tax and 5 April 2027 for Income Tax; check with your accountant. [S7]
Ask your solicitor to review planning, land control, lease duration, exit and redevelopment rights, liability and reinstatement. Allocate parking enforcement, maintenance and business rates explicitly. Customer access can fall within the Public Charge Point Regulations even when opening hours are restricted. [S8]
Next step: test your Northumberland site
Gather your postcode, parking pattern, cable route and supply details, then get matched with an installer that covers your area.
Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. Before passing on details, we name the proposed partner and disclose whether the owner holds shares in it.
How many plug-in vehicles share each public charger here?
Northumberland has 11.5 privately kept plug-in vehicles for every public charger, ranked 268 of 357 UK councils (1 = most vehicles per charger). The UK figure is 13.1; the middle council has 17.8.
That is fewer than most councils: the public network here is already relatively dense, so a new site needs a clear reason drivers will stop, such as dwell time or a customer offer.

Common questions
How much workplace charging support can your business claim?
Eligible applicants can receive up to 75% of purchase and installation costs, capped at £500 per socket and 40 sockets across their sites. The Workplace Charging Scheme runs until 31 March 2027. [S6]
Should you apply for the charging voucher before installation?
Yes. Apply, receive the voucher and give its code to an authorised installer before work proceeds. The installer checks validity and deducts the eligible grant from your invoice. [S6]
Does customer-only parking remove public charging obligations?
No. Regulation 3 includes public car parks restricted to customers purchasing goods or services, and points accessible only during specified hours. Have the proposed access and payment arrangements assessed. [S8]
How should you check planning and site suitability before ordering?
Prepare a site plan, supply details and proposed cable route, then identify planning conditions or listed building constraints. Request a written permission assessment for that layout; check with your solicitor. A generic installation price does not establish consent. [S9]
Does the income illustration include VAT or financing?
Its assumed driver tariff and electricity cost exclude VAT; financing and tax are also excluded. Recalculate using your actual VAT recovery position and financing costs. HMRC describes a 100% first-year allowance for qualifying chargepoint expenditure; check with your accountant. [S7]
What should an itemised installation quote separate?
Separate charger installation, cable routes, groundworks, grid connection and ongoing software and maintenance. Infrastructure and supply assessment can materially alter the project cost, so compare the same scope rather than the headline charger price. [S9], [S10]
