Business EV charging in Maldon: where should you start?
Maldon district had 42 public chargers on 1 July 2026 [S1]. Its provision per resident was below regional and UK comparisons. The council's charging strategy also addresses rural coverage, so your proposal should identify the particular village, customer group or workplace need it serves rather than treat the district total as proof of commercial demand. Checked October 2026.
How much public EV charging does Maldon district have?
Maldon’s public charger provision per resident is lower than both the East of England and UK comparisons. Its rapid-or-above rate is also lower. The figures cover the whole district, not just Maldon town, so use them as a starting point for a site survey rather than a map of individual charging gaps. [S1]
| Geography | Public chargers | Public per 100,000 | Rapid or above per 100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maldon | 42 | 60.8 | 24.6 |
| East of England | 9,880 | 150.2 | 48.8 |
| UK | 121,171 | 174.9 | 41.7 |
The snapshot is 1 July 2026; Maldon has 17 rapid-or-above chargers. The aggregate rates are our calculations from the council dataset: infer each population as public chargers × 100,000 ÷ council rate, sum the inferred populations, then divide total chargers by the population sum and multiply by 100,000. Rounding of the input rates makes these aggregate comparisons approximate. [S1] See the East of England overview for the regional context.
At the end of 2026 Q2, Maldon district had 2,616 plug-in vehicles, including 1,593 battery electric vehicles. The vehicle series records keeper addresses. It does not identify who needs charging away from home or how often a vehicle visits your premises. [S2]
Where does the council identify a need for charging?
The council adopted its EV Charging and Low Emissions Strategy covering 2025 to 2028. Its adoption discussion named Great Totham, Tolleshunt D’Arcy, Tollesbury, Latchingdon and Tillingham as rural locations raised through county work. Members also raised Southminster and Burnham-on-Crouch. Implementation remained subject to funding and council priorities. [S3]
These are useful places to investigate, not a list of confirmed installations or commercial opportunities. If your business serves a village, check the alternatives within the actual trip your customers make. A bay available only during your opening hours may serve a different need from overnight residential charging.
Ask customers about charging requests and record parking duration before choosing a funding model. Review proposed public provision with the council as part of that research. Avoid relying on a low district rate to justify equipment that your regular users cannot reach or do not need.
Which Maldon businesses should assess installation costs?
For a rural retail stop, use farm shops and garden centres to frame the parking and dwell-time questions. A business with land and its own vehicles should start with farms and rural businesses. A site selling overnight stays can use hotels and holiday parks. These are assessment routes, not claims that every business in those categories has enough demand.
Ask for equipment, cable routes, groundworks and connection work as separate quote items. Include signs, pedestrian access and the operating service in the specification. A headline charger price leaves you unable to compare the cost of making different parts of your land usable.
UK Power Networks’ coverage map includes this area; confirm the address through its checker. It is the local distribution network operator (DNO), distinct from your electricity retailer. [S4] Request a supply assessment before deciding on power in kilowatts (kW). A kilowatt hour (kWh) is the energy delivered, which is the unit used in charging bills.
Which EV charging grants and funding terms should you check?
WCS offers up to £500 per eligible socket and runs until 31 March 2027. [S5] Check the Workplace Charging Scheme guide and identify the intended users before deducting any grant from your project cost.
Compare fully funded, part funded and self funded proposals with the same access plan. For fully funded, require the yearly host payment and its calculation. For part funded and self funded, require yearly net income, simple return on investment and payback in years under differing levels of use. No district-wide income forecast follows from the charging statistics.
Qualifying new and unused chargepoint equipment bought before April 2027 can receive first-year capital allowances. [S7] Check with your accountant. Ask your solicitor to review parking rights, liability, lease exit and removal costs before signing any land agreement.
For public charging, include regulation 11’s energy-price display requirements in the operating brief. [S6] Make responsibility for that display explicit when comparing management services.

Common questions
Must a business provide EV charging without a fee?
Regulation 11 explicitly provides for a charging price and requires it to be displayed in pence per kilowatt hour. Decide whether your site will sell energy or fund charging as an amenity. [S6]
What should drivers see before paying to charge?
Public charging must show the total charging price in pence per kilowatt hour without requiring a pre-existing contract. Regulation 11 also prevents that price increasing once charging starts. [S6]
How can a host check which cars a charger supports?
Request the connector specification and supported vehicles before ordering. Regulation 10 includes connector type within public reference data, so use that field to compare proposed equipment. [S6]
Does the council strategy confirm a charger for my village?
The adoption minutes make implementation subject to funding and council priorities. They record rural locations discussed, but are not confirmation that equipment at a particular address is operational. [S3]
Can ordinary customer-only bays receive WCS funding?
An ordinary business must evidence staff or fleet parking. Different user rules apply to public authorities, charities and small accommodation businesses. Establish your applicant category first. [S5]
Are chargers on private business land always private charging?
No. Regulation 3 includes public car parks serving people buying goods or services. Access and intended users matter, so check the proposed arrangement with your solicitor. [S6]
