What is OCPP 2.0.1, and how does it differ from 1.6?
Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.0.1 connects chargers with their management software. Compared with 1.6, it adds device management, security and ISO 15118 support [S1]. Ask which features the exact product implements and which certification profiles cover them [S2]. A version label alone does not establish that your planned charging service works. Checked October 2026.
What is OCPP 2.0.1?
Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.0.1 is a communication specification linking a charging station with its management system [S1].
Why it matters for your site: specify the functions your charger and software must perform together before accepting a version label.
The Open Charge Alliance says 2.0.1 and 1.6 are not compatible [S1]. Ask for the supported version on each side and a demonstration of the proposed combination. Read the OCPP and OCPI guide for the wider software connections.
What changed compared with OCPP 1.6?
| Area | What 2.0.1 adds or develops |
|---|---|
| Device management | A richer model for configuration and monitoring |
| Security | Defined security capabilities within the protocol |
| Smart charging | Additional control functions |
| Vehicle communication | ISO 15118 support |
| Transactions | Revised handling of charging sessions |
These are protocol capabilities, rather than a checklist every product has implemented [S1]. For example, ask how the operator monitors faults, manages certificates and changes a charging schedule. Request the configured security profile in the handover documents.
OCA describes three security levels, client certificate management, signed firmware updates and security event logging [S4]. Ask which are implemented and enabled in your installation.
OCPP 1.6 already supports smart charging [S1]. OCA also publishes a security extension for it [S3]. Assess the actual implementation rather than treating the older version as lacking either capability.
What certification evidence should you request?
OCA’s 2.0.1 programme makes Core mandatory and lists Advanced Security, Smart Charging and ISO 15118 Support as optional profiles [S2]. Match the certificate to the proposed product and software, then check the functions your site needs.
Ask for a commissioning demonstration covering remote control, session records and your required charging limits. Keep the results with the quote comparison. Use the charging cost tool separately for electricity assumptions.
Include these requirements when switching management software.

Common questions
Can a 2.0.1 charger communicate directly using 1.6?
The versions are not compatible [S1]. Require confirmation of the versions supported by both charger and management system.
Does a Core certificate include every optional feature?
No. Core is mandatory; Advanced Security, Smart Charging and ISO 15118 Support are optional certification profiles [S2]. Check each required profile.
Is smart charging absent from 1.6?
No. OCPP 1.6 includes charging profiles and load-balancing support [S1]. Specify your actual control requirements.
Must older equipment lack secure communications?
No. OCA publishes security extensions for OCPP 1.6, covering secure connections, security logs and firmware updates [S3]. Ask what the offered implementation uses.
Does OCPP connect the car directly to the charger?
OCPP connects charging stations with management systems. ISO 15118 concerns the vehicle-facing interface supported within 2.0.1 [S1]. Ask for both interfaces in the specification.
