How much does a commercial solar carport cost in the UK?

DESNZ sought views on an estimated £140,000 installation cost for solar canopies at an 80-space car park, at 2025 prices [S1]. That is a consultation benchmark, not a current quote or a cost for every layout. Request separate allowances for structure, foundations, electrical work and site disruption before comparing commercial solar carport offers. Checked October 2026.

How much does a commercial solar carport cost?

There is a useful public benchmark, but it needs its context. DESNZ’s call for evidence sought views on an estimate of around £140,000 to install solar canopies on an 80-space car park, expressed in 2025 prices [S1]. It was testing an estimate, rather than publishing a current price list for business installations.

Do not divide that number by the parking spaces and apply the result to your own scheme. The source does not establish a universal panel capacity or canopy specification for every bay. Ask how much parking will actually be covered and how much generating equipment will be installed.

Kilowatts, or kW, measure power. A solar array may be described in kilowatts peak, or kWp, its rated peak power under test conditions. Kilowatt-hours, or kWh, measure generated or consumed energy. Keep covered bays, installed kWp and expected annual kWh as separate comparison columns. Read commercial solar panel costs for the related rooftop decision. Compare solar carports with rooftop solar before settling the installation scope.

What should a solar carport cost estimate include?

Ask every bidder to price the same drawing and scope. The BRE guide treats carport layout, structural design and electrical infrastructure as connected design decisions [S2]. A low panel price tells you little about the complete structure over your customers’ vehicles.

Use this schedule to expose omissions before comparing totals:

Scope line Evidence or allowance to request
Surveys and design Ground information, services search and structural design
Supporting structure Frame, protection, foundations and vehicle impact assessment
Weather management Roof arrangement, gutters, drainage and cleaning access
Solar equipment Panel capacity, inverter ratings and performance model
Electrical installation Cable route, distribution equipment, metering and protection
Network work Application scope, accepted export limit and connection charges
Parking operation Temporary layout, accessible routes and trading disruption
Charging and storage Separate equipment, controls and operating service prices

This is a procurement checklist, not a claim that each item attracts the same cost at every site. Ask for the assumptions behind provisional sums. Keep any unpriced work visible in the comparison instead of treating a blank line as included.

How can you compare two solar carport quotations fairly?

Use a scope-adjusted comparison. The following is an illustration, not a quote. All figures are assumed, exclude VAT and describe offers with identical generating capacity. They are not market cost ranges.

Assumed cost item Offer A Offer B
Quoted installation £120,000 £150,000
Foundation work omitted from quote £25,000 Included
Electrical route omitted from quote £15,000 Included
Traffic management omitted from quote £5,000 Included
Scope-adjusted total £165,000 £150,000

Offer A becomes £120,000 + £25,000 + £15,000 + £5,000 = £165,000. The illustrative difference is £15,000 against Offer B. This arithmetic does not establish which offer to accept; quality, exclusions and the written scope still need assessment.

Ask bidders to mark whether future EV chargers can use the proposed ducts and distribution equipment. If charging will be added later, request a staged plan with each phase’s costs and responsibilities. Avoid paying for spare infrastructure without a documented purpose and a drawing showing where it will be used.

What could change the cost of a solar EV carport?

Start with your parking layout. Ask for a plan that shows columns, vehicle doors, accessible routes, delivery movements and the vehicles that must pass underneath. A change in structural layout may alter the project even when the solar panel count stays the same. BRE discusses layout and structural options as part of carport development [S2].

Then request a construction plan around your opening hours. Ask which spaces close, how customers reach the entrance and whether installations can be staged. DESNZ explicitly identifies foregone parking revenue during construction as a separate cost consideration [S1]. Use your own records to value any closure.

For illustration, assume 12 paid spaces close for 10 days and would each have produced £6 daily net parking income. The assumed disruption cost is 12 × 10 × £6 = £720. Substitute your own occupancy and margin; this is not a forecast of lost retail sales or a standard construction period.

What about planning, the grid and ongoing maintenance?

DESNZ describes England’s conditional permitted development route for qualifying solar canopies in non-domestic off-street car parks. Prior approval considerations remain part of that route [S1]. Have your planner check the actual site and nation before placing a construction order. See solar carport planning permission.

Ask the distribution network operator, or DNO, about the complete generating proposal. G99 is the engineering recommendation for generation connections outside the qualifying small-generation G98 route [S3]. Your electricity supply contract is a separate matter. Use G98 versus G99 to prepare the connection questions.

Request annual costs for inspections, cleaning, vegetation management, monitoring and replacement allowances. DESNZ tested an annual maintenance estimate of £1,400 for its illustrative 80-space scheme at 2025 prices [S1]. Treat that as context, not an operating budget for your particular canopy.

How should you compare ownership and funding offers?

For a fully funded proposal, request the annual host income method and the rights being granted over your car park. For a part funded proposal, request your contribution, net income share and exit terms. For a self funded proposal, include the entire installed cost and recurring costs in your own project calculation.

Request separate values for electricity used on site, exports and charging income. Do not add avoided electricity purchases to a charging margin that has already assumed solar energy at no cost. Our combined solar, storage and charging guide shows a method. Ask your accountant to check the tax assumptions and your solicitor to review the land agreement.

What should you do next?

Prepare a car park plan, opening hours and electricity information, then get matched with an installer that covers your area for a defined scope and site assessment.

Common questions

Is a carport simply rooftop solar installed over parking spaces?

A solar carport includes a supporting canopy and its foundations, alongside generation equipment. The BRE guide addresses the structure and parking layout as part of the design [S2].

Does the public cost benchmark include your EV charging installation?

Do not assume so. DESNZ discusses canopy installation, grid costs and charging equipment separately. Request a priced charging schedule and explicit exclusions in your proposal [S1].

Can you install solar carports without a full planning application?

England has a conditional permitted development route for qualifying non-domestic off-street car parks, including prior approval considerations. Ask your planner to confirm the applicable route [S1].

Does avoiding export remove the generation connection process?

Do not assume it does. Give your designer the full generating arrangement and any proposed export controls so the network can assess the applicable connection route [S3].

Should you compare a canopy with using your existing roof?

Yes. The BRE guide treats carports as a distinct design with parking and structural requirements. Request comparable usable generation and whole-project scopes, including any roof work [S2].
