What is a CHAdeMO EV charging connector?

CHAdeMO is a direct current (DC) charging interface used by compatible electric vehicles. ChargeUK's 2023 parliamentary evidence describes new UK vehicles shifting towards CCS [S1], [S2]. That does not mean older CHAdeMO vehicles stop needing charging. Base your connector choice on your fleet and visitors, and request a supported vehicle list before ordering. Checked October 2026.

What is a CHAdeMO connector?

CHAdeMO is an electric vehicle charging interface for direct current (DC) charging, distinct from the Combined Charging System (CCS) interface [S1].

Why it matters for your site: a driver needs compatible equipment, so your intended vehicle population should shape the connectors you specify.

The association explains the name as an abbreviation of CHArge de MOve, with Japanese wordplay about tea while charging [S4].

The CMA distinguishes these DC interfaces from alternating current (AC) connectors such as Type 2 [S1]. Use the connector-types guide for the shared basics.

Why is CHAdeMO less prominent in new UK vehicles?

ChargeUK’s 2023 evidence to Parliament described a shift towards CCS among new UK and European electric vehicles [S2]. That is historical market evidence, rather than a current count of compatible cars or chargers.

The CHAdeMO Association’s 2026 consultation response also identifies declining European adoption and calls for continued infrastructure for older vehicles [S3]. The practical distinction is between new-vehicle choices and the charging needs of vehicles already in use.

Do not interpret that transition as a verified UK shutdown date. Ask your fleet manager and regular visitors which inlets their actual vehicles use. Review replacement plans alongside present demand.

Should your site retain support for older vehicles?

For a known fleet, request compatibility for each vehicle variant and ask how long the equipment will be supported. For customer parking, record requests and session use before deciding whether to remove an existing connection. The association specifically highlights continued second-hand vehicle use [S3].

A connector name does not establish delivered speed or simultaneous operation. Ask for output per cable, the combined limit and operation when another vehicle connects. Read dual-socket power sharing and charging speeds. Use the charging cost tool for separate price assumptions.

Common questions

What does the name CHAdeMO mean?

The association says it abbreviates CHArge de MOve and also makes a Japanese wordplay about having tea while charging [S4]. It is the interface name, not a power rating.

Is CHAdeMO another name for Type 2?

No. The CMA distinguishes CHAdeMO and CCS for DC charging from Type 1 and Type 2 for AC charging [S1]. Check both the charging mode and vehicle inlet.

Can a CCS cable plug straight into a CHAdeMO inlet?

They are different connector interfaces [S1]. Do not direct a vehicle to an incompatible cable; obtain confirmation for any proposed adapter from the vehicle and equipment manufacturers.

Does the move to CCS mean all existing CHAdeMO chargers must close?

The cited sources establish a vehicle-market shift and a call to retain legacy infrastructure, not a UK closure deadline [S2], [S3]. Ask for the actual support term in your equipment contract.

Do two attached connector types establish simultaneous charging?

No. The CMA describes multi-connector equipment for compatibility [S1]. Request written confirmation of simultaneous operation and shared output for the model offered.
