Which UK government EV charging schemes can your business use?

Start with who uses your chargers and who pays for them. The Workplace Charging Scheme offers eligible workplaces up to £500 per socket [S1]. Residential, depot and council schemes have different applicants and deadlines. Tax relief is separate from grant funding, and the next depot round has unconfirmed rates. Checked October 2026.

UK grants for businesses installing EV charge points in 2026 depend on the applicant and parking use. Start with the Workplace Charging Scheme for eligible staff or fleet bays [S1]. Education institutions [S3] and residential landlords [S4] have separate routes. Depot support has application windows and terms to confirm [S7]; LEVI funds eligible councils rather than direct business applications [S8].

Which scheme fits your site?

Choose the route by applicant and parking use. A workplace grant is not a general subsidy for every customer car park. Start with this shortlist, then read the scheme conditions linked below. [S1], [S8]

Your project Route to investigate
Staff or business fleet parking Workplace Charging Scheme
State-funded school or college Education WCS
Residential property you let Residential landlord chargepoint grant
Tenant or resident flat owner Flats and renters chargepoint grant
Commercial van, truck or coach depot Depot Charging Scheme
Public charging for residents without driveways Council LEVI programme in England
Buying chargers for your business Capital allowances and VAT recovery

Use the grants tool to organise questions. Compare quotations with identical scope: charging equipment, groundworks, supply connection and ongoing fees. A headline grant does not settle who pays for an unexpected electrical upgrade.

How much does the Workplace Charging Scheme pay?

The official WCS listing offers eligible businesses, charities, public bodies and small accommodation businesses 75% of purchase and installation costs including VAT, capped at £500 per socket. The limit is 40 sockets across the applicant’s sites. Funding runs until 31 March 2027. [S1]

Ordinary business applicants principally use the chargers for staff or fleets; local residents may use them outside office hours. Public bodies, charities and small accommodation businesses have broader user permissions. Check your category before assuming customer charging is covered. [S1]

For eligible state-funded education institutions, education WCS pays 75%, capped at £2,000 per socket, with up to 40 sockets. Its published funding end date is also 31 March 2027. [S2], [S3]

Are landlord, renter and flat grants still open?

Yes: the following residential routes have funding available until 31 March 2027. They serve housing needs, rather than replacing commercial workplace funding. [S2]

Applicant and official route Amount and limit
Residential landlord 75%, up to £500 per socket; 200 sockets per year [S4]
Resident flat owner or residential renter 75%, up to £500 for a socket [S5]
Eligible household using on-street parking 75%, up to £500 for a socket [S6]

The on-street route requires a cross-pavement charging solution; it is not an award for a business visitor bay. The residential landlord socket allocation covers the whole group where organisations are under common control. [S4], [S6]

The commercial landlord chargepoint grant, staff and fleets infrastructure grant and residential landlord infrastructure grant closed to applications on 31 March 2026. Do not put those older awards in your funding plan. The remaining residential schemes require approval before installation. [S2]

Can your depot apply, and can a business use LEVI?

The Depot Charging Scheme covers eligible UK fleet operators owning or leasing depots, with existing or planned battery-electric vans, heavy goods vehicles or coaches. Its first application round closed on 30 June 2026. That round offered 70% of eligible chargepoint and civil costs, capped at £1 million across sites, with completion by 31 March 2027. [S7]

The listing expects another window from 28 October 2026 to 29 January 2027, for delivery by 31 March 2028. Its next-round rates and terms are unconfirmed. The page header also shows a conflicting closing date, so use the detailed round information and confirm availability directly before committing expenditure. [S7]

Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure funding, or LEVI, is for eligible English local authorities delivering residential public charging. A shop or hotel cannot apply as if it were a workplace voucher. Councils may procure delivery partners; discuss a possible location with your council. Allocations and procurement timetables vary, so there is no business award amount or universal business application deadline. [S8]

Which electric van and truck purchase grants apply?

These reduce eligible vehicle purchase prices, rather than paying for your charger. The seller includes the discount. [S9], [S10]

Vehicle weight category Current maximum discount
Van below 2,500 kg 35%, capped at £2,500 [S9]
Van from 2,500 to 4,250 kg 35%, capped at £5,000 [S9]
Truck from 4.25 to 12 tonnes 20%, capped at £15,000 [S10]
Truck from 12 to 18 tonnes 40%, capped at £37,000 [S10]
Truck from 18 to 26 tonnes 40%, capped at £52,000 [S10]
Truck over 26 tonnes 40%, capped at £81,000 [S10]

For Northern Ireland large enterprises, the truck percentage above the lightest category is 30%. Check the official model lists: registration in the UK and scheme-specific eligibility matter. Grant levels can change. [S10], [S16]

The official subsidy report describes the scheme running until 31 March 2030 or budget exhaustion. Treat that as the programme horizon, not a commitment that today’s rates remain available until then. Confirm order and registration deadlines with the seller. [S17]

What capital allowances and business rates relief apply?

HMRC publishes a 100% first-year allowance for qualifying chargepoint expenditure through 31 March 2027 for Corporation Tax and 5 April 2027 for Income Tax. This is a deduction in calculating taxable profits, not a reimbursement of the whole installation bill. Check eligible expenditure and grant interactions with your accountant. [S11]

England provides 100% business rates relief for qualifying separately assessed charging properties through 31 March 2036, with eligible backdating to 1 April 2023. It does not remove the rates bill for your whole pub, hotel or office. Establish who is the ratepayer in a funded agreement. [S12]

Keep chargepoint capital allowances separate from VAT on buying chargers. A tax deduction, VAT reclaim and grant perform different jobs in your budget; check the calculations with your accountant.

What additional schemes exist in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Scotland’s announced package includes Rural and Island Workplace Charging for microbusinesses and third sector organisations, the Rural and Island Infrastructure Fund, factored-development support and a transition fund for existing public chargers. Individual award amounts and application deadlines were not verified here, so obtain the current terms before budgeting. The separate EV Infrastructure Fund works through councils and regional collaborations. [S13], [S14]

Wales provides 100% rates relief for eligible separately assessed public charging properties in 2026-27, including eligible backdating to 2024-25. Councils administer it. The guidance describes statutory relief from April 2027 to March 2036 as an intention, which should not be presented as already enacted. [S15]

WCS covers Northern Ireland. This check did not verify a separate open Northern Ireland business installation award, so no extra amount or deadline is included. That does not establish that local support is unavailable. Use the national route while checking your local position. [S1]

What should you do next?

Prepare your postcode, parking users, lease permissions, fleet plans and an itemised quotation. Request separate offers for fully funded, part funded and self funded arrangements. Ask who applies for support, owns the equipment and carries ongoing costs. Compare exit terms and responsibility for reinstating the bays with your solicitor.

Common questions

What UK grants are there for businesses installing EV charge points in 2026?

Start with WCS for eligible workplace charging [S1], education WCS for eligible institutions [S3] and the separate residential landlord route [S4]. Depot support has application windows; confirm availability and terms [S7]. LEVI is council funding [S8].

Can you apply for workplace support in Northern Ireland?

Yes. WCS covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, subject to its site and applicant conditions. It excludes the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. [S1]

Can a grant pay for an installation already completed?

Do not assume retrospective funding. For flats, renters and residential landlords, OZEV says installation must wait until eligibility approval arrives. Apply before committing the work. [S2]

How long does a workplace voucher last?

A WCS voucher lasts 180 days. Installation and the installer claim must both be completed within that period. Check the voucher expiry against the scheme's final-year timetable. [S1]

Can you combine depot funding with another government grant?

The depot conditions prohibit similar government funding for any part of the funded activities. Separate the costs and obtain scheme clarification before combining awards. [S7]

Does every car park with charging qualify for rates relief?

No. England's relief requires a separately assessed charging property. Bays within a larger assessment do not qualify under this relief. Ask the billing council to check the assessment. [S12]

Do you apply personally for the electric van discount?

The dealership applies the grant deduction at purchase for an eligible vehicle. Customers do not complete the manufacturer's grant application. Confirm the exact model and discount before ordering. [S16]
