What is solar performance ratio?

Solar performance ratio compares an array's delivered energy with its rated output adjusted for received sunlight. IEA PVPS reported a 70–90% range across newer installations in its historical study [S1]. Use PR to investigate performance against an agreed baseline, rather than to measure how much solar electricity your business consumes. Checked October 2026.

What does solar performance ratio mean for your site?

Solar performance ratio (PR) is final energy yield divided by the reference yield calculated from sunlight received in the array’s plane [S2]. Why it matters for your site: it helps you ask whether a generation shortfall reflects available sunshine or losses within the installation.

Kilowatts (kW) measure power; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy. Kilowatt peak (kWp) states rated panel power. PR uses energy over a period, rather than a dashboard’s momentary power reading [S2].

How do you calculate solar performance ratio?

The method is PR = final yield ÷ reference yield [S2]. An illustration, not a quote: assume an array rated at 100 kWp delivers 85,000 kWh, and measured sunlight gives a reference yield of 1,000 equivalent full-power hours.

  • Final yield = 85,000 ÷ 100 = 850 hours.
  • PR = 850 ÷ 1,000 = 0.85, or 85%.

All inputs are assumptions. Ask your monitoring contractor to identify the energy meter, sunlight measurement, excluded downtime and reporting dates before applying the method to your records.

What does a typical performance ratio range tell you?

The historical IEA PVPS study described newer installations spanning 70–90%, with typical values above 80% [S1]. That is context, rather than a current UK acceptance threshold. Agree the baseline and comparison method for your own array.

The research uses falling performance to investigate possible faults [S1]. Follow commercial solar monitoring for the practical checks, and panel lifespan and degradation for ageing. Keep those questions separate from how much generated energy your business uses.

Common questions

Is performance ratio the same as panel efficiency?

No. PR compares system yields; module efficiency relates electrical output to incoming light over panel area [S2].

Does a cloudy month prove the array has a fault?

No. Compare output with received sunlight and the baseline before attributing a shortfall to equipment [S1].

Is PR the percentage of solar electricity used on site?

No. PR measures generation performance. Self-use needs separate consumption and generation readings [S2].

Should a monitoring report state its measurement period?

Yes. Request matching periods for energy and sunlight inputs so the yield comparison is meaningful [S2].

Can PR identify which component needs repair?

A low PR can prompt investigation; fault diagnosis needs additional operating data and equipment checks [S1].
