What is an export MPAN for your business site?
An export MPAN identifies your site's electricity export metering point. It differs from the import MPAN used for electricity bought from the grid. Ofgem describes the MPAN as a 13-digit reference and requires an export MPAN for SEG eligibility [S1]. The number, suitable metering and an accepted export arrangement need to work together. Checked October 2026.
How is an export MPAN different from an import MPAN?
MPAN means Meter Point Administration Number. The export number identifies the outward electricity flow for registration and payment purposes; your import number relates to electricity bought for your premises. Ofgem says the numbers are different [S1]. Read what an MPAN is for the general identification basics.
Treat them as separate records in your project folder. Label each with its direction, site address and meter details. If an application asks for the export number, do not copy the import number simply because it is visible on your purchase bill. UK Power Networks distinguishes its export lookup from its import-number service [S3].
When does your business need an export MPAN?
For eligible generation in Great Britain, the Smart Export Guarantee, or SEG, requires an export MPAN and metered export. Ofgem’s metering guidance requires equipment capable of measuring export at half-hourly intervals [S2]. Read the business SEG guide for the wider eligibility checks.
The number is an administrative identifier, rather than an income forecast. Before including export receipts in your proposal, request confirmation of the meter registration, accepted contract and reading arrangements. Do not treat equipment producing surplus electricity as proof that a payment arrangement is active.
For a site with solar panels, keep generation and export records separately. Your assessment needs to distinguish electricity used within the premises from electricity sent to the grid. Use the load profile explainer when preparing consumption records for that assessment.
Who sets up the export MPAN?
Start with the SEG licensee handling your export application. Ofgem places responsibility on that licensee to ensure the generator has an export MPAN associated with the meter and registered under the Balancing and Settlement Code [S2]. Ask it to confirm what remains outstanding and who is handling each action.
Your distribution network operator, or DNO, runs the local network. UK Power Networks provides an export-number lookup for its network [S3]. That is a way to investigate an existing record; it does not replace the export application. Keep the network correspondence, installation documents and export-account correspondence together.
If different parties report different numbers, ask the licensee to reconcile the registration before proceeding. Avoid requesting another number without checking the existing record. Record the agreed number and meter association in writing so future queries refer to the same installation.
What should you do next?
Use the cut energy costs hub and site check to prepare your project, then get matched with an installer that covers your area. Include any unresolved export-registration question in the enquiry.
Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. Before passing on your details, we name the proposed partner and disclose any shareholding our owner holds in it. Read how we work.
Common questions
Can your import electricity company also handle export?
Yes, if it offers and accepts the relevant export arrangement. Ofgem says your SEG licensee can be the same company as your import supplier or a different company [S1]. Keep the two MPAN records distinct.
Can you receive SEG payments from two companies at once?
No. Ofgem's generator guidance allows a SEG export tariff from only one SEG licensee at a time [S1]. Confirm the active arrangement before authorising a change.
Must you replace your existing electricity meter?
Not necessarily. Ofgem says your existing meter may measure export. Ask the SEG licensee to confirm that it meets the half-hourly measurement requirement and is associated with the export MPAN [S2].
Does every SEG payment require an automated meter reading?
No. Ofgem says licensees can accept manual readings when automated readings are unavailable [S2]. Agree the reading procedure and keep a dated record of the export register.
What should you do if your export number cannot be found?
Ask your SEG licensee to check the meter association and industry registration [S2]. For a site on UK Power Networks' network, its export lookup is a further route to check an existing number [S3].
