What is an energy management system for site batteries?
An energy management system, or EMS, coordinates how site equipment operates, including when a battery charges or discharges [S1]. For an assumed 20 kW demand excess lasting half an hour, the requested battery delivery is 20 × 0.5 = 10 kWh before losses. Ask which controls run locally, which need cloud access and how limits remain enforced. Checked October 2026.
What does an energy management system control?
An energy management system (EMS) is the control layer that coordinates energy equipment against an operating schedule and site objectives [S1], [S3]. It matters for your site because the same battery may be asked to serve building demand, vehicle charging and an export constraint.
Specify the requested functions: charging and discharge schedules, priority loads, reserve settings and coordination with import or export controls. DESNZ describes an overall plant controller interacting with battery management and other control systems, including an EMS [S1]. Product labels alone do not explain that division of work.
What is the difference between local and cloud control?
Local control runs on equipment at your premises. Cloud control uses a remote service. Ask the bidder to mark where each function runs, which measurements it needs and what remains available without an internet connection. Request a demonstration rather than assuming the dashboard describes the control architecture.
Keep scheduling separate from enforced electrical limits. G100, the Engineering Recommendation for customer import/export limitation schemes, includes tests for failure of scheme components and communication paths [S2]. Your distribution network operator (DNO), which manages the local network, should receive the appropriate connection evidence. Check the applicable edition and agreed settings with your designer.
How should you specify a useful operating schedule?
Write down which task has priority when requirements conflict. For an illustration, assume a depot needs 20 kilowatts (kW) of battery power for half an hour: 20 × 0.5 = 10 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of delivered energy before allowing for losses. Power and available energy must both support that instruction.
Use how a business battery works for the component map and peak shaving for demand control. Research on solar-battery scheduling shows that additional complexity does not automatically improve economic performance [S3].

Common questions
Is an EMS the same as a battery management system?
No. DESNZ describes battery management systems monitoring batteries within a wider control hierarchy. Request a diagram distinguishing battery limits, plant control and energy scheduling [S1].
Does an app alone establish export-limit compliance?
No. G100 describes a customer limitation scheme with commissioning and failure tests. Ask for evidence that the actual connection-control arrangement meets the applicable network requirements [S2].
What should happen if communications fail?
For a G100 limitation scheme, failure tests check that connection conditions stay within, or return within the required time to, the design limits. Request the test record for lost communications [S2].
Does more sophisticated scheduling always improve returns?
No. A review of solar-battery control research found results depend on input uncertainty and degradation assumptions. Request a site-specific comparison with a simple schedule and disclosed costs [S3].
What commissioning evidence should you request?
Ask for demonstrated control signals, alarms and coordinated inverter protection. DESNZ includes testing across the control hierarchy in its grid-scale commissioning guidance; agree the relevant site tests with your designer [S1].
