What is a point of common coupling?
A point of common coupling, or PCC, is the nearest electrical point on the distribution network where other customers connect or could connect [S1]. It may differ from your site's connection point. G100 Issue 2 describes controls monitoring import and export at the connection point, so your designer must label both locations accurately [S2]. Checked October 2026.
What is a point of common coupling?
A point of common coupling (PCC) is the electrically nearest point on the distribution network where other customers are connected or could be connected. It identifies a shared network location rather than necessarily your meter, property boundary or inverter terminals [S1].
Why it matters for your site: the PCC helps explain where the network assesses effects on other users. A solar or battery proposal needs an electrical drawing that identifies the relevant assessment and control points [S1], [S2].
The G98 and G99 guide explains generation connection routes. G98 and G99 are engineering recommendations for connecting generating equipment in parallel with the distribution network. The PCC is a location used in technical assessment, rather than a separate application route [S1].
Is the PCC the same as your connection point?
Do not assume the labels are interchangeable. Your connection point describes the interface for your installation; the PCC definition refers to where other customers share or could share the network. A dedicated connection can put these at different locations [S1].
Request a single-line diagram: a simplified drawing showing the electrical connections. Ask your distribution network operator (DNO), which manages the local network, to confirm the labelled PCC and connection point before the design is finalised.
Where should an export limit be measured?
The ENA’s G100 Issue 2 overview describes monitoring electricity flow at the connection point. G100 covers customer import and export limitation schemes [S2]. Calling that point a PCC without checking the drawing can create confusion about what the controller measures.
For your project, request a diagram showing all solar, battery and relevant site loads behind the monitored boundary. Ask the designer to reconcile the drawing with the connection offer. Use G100 export limitation explained for the control scheme details.
Next step
Plan how to cut site energy costs. Bring your connection drawing to the site check, then get matched with an installer that covers your area.
Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. Before sharing your details, we name the proposed partner and disclose any shareholding in it.
Common questions
Does PCC mean the nearest substation on a map?
No. The definition concerns electrical proximity and the point where other customers connect or could connect. Ask for its location on the network diagram [S1].
Is the PCC always beside your meter?
No. A meter location alone does not satisfy the PCC definition. Have the designer identify the shared network point separately from the metering position [S1].
Why does a connection assessment consider other customers?
G99 addresses effects such as voltage fluctuations and unbalance at the PCC, where neighbouring customers may be affected [S1].
Does G100 control each solar panel separately?
Its overview describes monitoring the combined flow across the connection point and controlling relevant devices. Request the site control diagram rather than assuming a panel-level limit [S2].
Can export limitation replace generation connection approval?
No. G100 describes limitation controls used alongside generation connection requirements. Ask your designer to document the connection route and limitation scheme separately [S2].
