What is a commissioning test?
A commissioning test checks and records whether installed equipment operates as intended before handover. Your pack should distinguish electrical safety results from functional demonstrations. BS EN 62446-1 covers documentation, inspection and commissioning for grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems [S2]. Agree the tests and acceptance criteria for your chargers or battery before installation. Checked October 2026.
What does a commissioning test mean for your site?
A commissioning test is a recorded check that newly installed equipment performs its intended function before handover. For your site, it turns a claim that equipment is working into evidence you can retain. DESNZ describes battery commissioning as demonstrating, measuring and recording component and system performance [S3].
Agree the test plan before installation. State the function being demonstrated, the pass criteria, who witnesses it and what happens if it fails. Do not treat a photograph of an illuminated display as the entire handover.
What should the tests cover?
Separate electrical verification from operational demonstrations. The IET’s installation certificate includes inspection and test schedules covering matters such as protective conductors, insulation and protective devices [S1]. Ask the contractor to identify the tests applicable to your installation.
For chargers, request a witnessed charging session and demonstration of the controls you ordered. For solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, BSI identifies BS EN 62446-1 as covering customer documentation, commissioning tests and inspection [S2]. For batteries, DESNZ describes checks of battery management, communications, alarms and system functions; its guidance concerns grid-scale systems, so agree a proportionate scope for your equipment [S3].
Use the battery acceptance checklist for detailed performance criteria and the charger certificate guide for electrical paperwork. Test work belongs with competent personnel using safe procedures [S4].
What paperwork should you receive?
Request signed results, installation certification, final settings, operating instructions and an outstanding-work list. Match each result to an asset and test date. The IET form records the extent of certified work; DESNZ emphasises recording commissioning issues, resolutions and approvals [S1], [S3].

Common questions
Can a facilities manager carry out electrical tests?
Electrical work needs suitable competence and safe working arrangements. Ask the competent contractor to conduct the tests; your representative can agree what evidence to witness [S4].
Which solar commissioning standard should your handover reference?
BSI describes BS EN 62446-1 as covering grid-connected solar system documentation, inspection and commissioning. Ask the designer to identify the applicable test regime for your installation [S2].
Does an electrical certificate prove battery capacity?
The certificate records electrical inspection and test results. Battery functional acceptance separately checks the system's intended duty; request the agreed capacity demonstration as part of that scope [S1], [S3].
Is a factory test sufficient for an installed battery?
DESNZ distinguishes factory acceptance from operational and whole-system site testing. Request evidence of the installed controls and interfaces as well as factory records [S3].
What should happen to faults found during testing?
Record the issue, correction and approval. DESNZ identifies these records as part of effective commissioning; ask for unresolved items and their retest evidence before signing acceptance [S3].
