How can you find a local council grant for business solar?

Search for business solar support using your installation postcode, then check the council's live application terms. South Cambridgeshire records a previous programme offering capital grants up to £5,000 [S1]; that historical amount is not a current offer. Confirm solar eligibility, match funding and permission to start work before including an award in your budget. Checked October 2026.

Are there local council grants for business solar panels?

There are official routes for researching local business support, but this page does not establish an open solar award for your site. Ofgem directs businesses to councils and the government finance finder when looking for efficiency funding. [S4] Use those routes to find the scheme owner, then check its current offer. Use the business energy grant and tax relief guide to prepare a wider funding search.

Keep separate records for the council area, installation address, applicant business and technology. A search result that says “green business” might cover an assessment, staff support or equipment other than solar. Ask explicitly whether solar photovoltaic panels, batteries, charging equipment and connection work are eligible, each as a separate cost.

Use the guides hub to prepare the underlying project. Funding research should run alongside a sensible roof and electricity assessment. A possible award does not remove the need to establish whether the installation fits your site.

How can you tell whether a council grant is open?

Follow the result to the council’s current application page. Look for application status, funding period, deadline, eligible expenditure and a named team. If the page only announces past awards, ask for the current route rather than using an old form.

These examples show why that distinction matters:

Council evidence Established fact Still unconfirmed
South Cambridgeshire fund page Previous grants up to £5,000 A live solar award
North Somerset research page Earlier grants up to £10,000 Current eligibility and deadline

The first council describes a programme supporting businesses across Cambridge City, South Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. [S1] North Somerset describes its grant programme in the past tense. [S2] Both are useful research leads; neither is presented here as a current offer. Ask the relevant council whether there is a successor programme, and retain its written answer.

Which small businesses and sites can apply?

Use the official finance finder, which provides location, support-type and business filters. [S3] An applicant’s registered office and its installation address can be different. Confirm which address the actual scheme uses before commissioning application work.

Send the administrator a short description covering your business activity, legal structure, trading address, tenure and proposed equipment. Ask which size definition and sector exclusions apply. Do not assume that “small business” means the same thing across all funding documents.

For a rented building, get the landlord involved early. Ask how the scheme handles tenant-funded assets, remaining lease length and equipment ownership. Have your solicitor check consent and any obligations that continue after you leave the site.

How much match funding would your business need?

Use the eligible amount rather than the entire invoice. The following is an illustration, not a quote, and does not describe a current council scheme. Every input is an assumption.

Assumed budget input Amount
Complete solar project £30,000
Costs hypothetically accepted as eligible £24,000
Assumed support rate 30% of eligible costs
Assumed award cap £5,000
Hypothetical award Lower of £24,000 × 30% and £5,000 = £5,000
Host project contribution £30,000 − £5,000 = £25,000

The remaining contribution comprises £19,000 of eligible costs and £6,000 of excluded costs. If the assumed scheme reimburses expenditure after completion, your business would still need to bridge the £30,000 payment. That payment timing is an assumption to test against the actual offer letter.

For a simple payback sensitivity, assume annual net energy benefits of £3,000 / £4,500 / £6,000 after maintenance. Payback without the hypothetical award is £30,000 ÷ benefit = 10.0 / 6.7 / 5.0 years. With the assumed award it is £25,000 ÷ benefit = 8.3 / 5.6 / 4.2 years. These benefit figures are scenario inputs, not output estimates. Replace them with a yield model and your own import and export prices.

See solar payback for the underlying energy calculation. Keep the no-award case visible until the council confirms funding. Check VAT treatment and the cash-flow forecast with your accountant; neither tax nor financing is included in this illustration.

Can you combine business grants with other funding?

Ask each scheme administrator before allocating the same invoice to another funding source. The UK government’s subsidy guidance explains minimal financial assistance and cumulation. Its £315,000 threshold covers the elapsed part of the current financial year and the two preceding financial years; it is not a solar grant budget. [S5]

Provide previous award letters and disclose related business support. Ask which subsidy route applies, including any nation-specific considerations, rather than trying to classify the award yourself. Check the answer with your accountant or solicitor. Read about green business loans if borrowing is proposed for your contribution.

What should your installer and council confirm before work starts?

Request a dated cost breakdown, installation specification, projected generation and the assumptions behind the energy case. Kilowatts (kW) measure power; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy. Make sure the installer distinguishes equipment capacity from annual generation rather than using the units interchangeably.

Ask the council whether an assessment, particular certification, competing quotes or written approval is needed before ordering. Confirm treatment of deposits, roof repairs, batteries, grid works and VAT. These are questions for the specific scheme, not asserted universal grant rules.

Agree who handles planning, network applications, roof suitability and landlord consent. Set realistic milestones for assessment, award, procurement, installation and claim evidence. Request written instructions on invoices, payment evidence, inspection and record retention. Keep a dated copy of the award conditions with your project budget so later changes are traceable.

What should you do next?

Take your postcode, bills and provisional scope to the council’s business team. Read how we work and get matched with an installer that covers your area. Piggy Pineapple Ltd operates this referral service. We refer enquiries to installer partners and may be paid a fee. Our owner holds shares in at least one partner. We name the proposed partner and disclose any shareholding our owner holds in it before passing on your details.

Common questions

Do small businesses have one council solar grant available across the UK?

Do not assume one common entitlement. The government finance finder filters support by location and type; use the installation postcode and verify each result's actual terms. [S3]

Can a sole trader use the business funding finder?

The finder includes support filters for sole traders as well as other business stages and types. Select your circumstances, then check whether the particular award accepts your legal structure. [S3]

Does a council announcement prove a grant is still open?

No. North Somerset describes Green Business Grants as a previous initiative, including its former £10,000 ceiling. Verify a current application route rather than treating that past award as available. [S2]

Does minimal financial assistance mean you can claim the whole subsidy threshold?

No. The £315,000 threshold concerns cumulative assistance over the applicable period, not an entitlement to an award. The council must identify the applicable rules; disclose previous support and check with your accountant or solicitor. [S5]

What should you ask if your council has no visible solar grant?

Ask its business team about energy-efficiency and sustainable business growth support. Ofgem specifically signposts local councils and the government finder; ask whether a carbon survey or another funding round is available before assuming direct equipment funding. [S4]
