How do you get EV drivers to find your chargers?

Make your charger details accurate on maps, agree who updates operator data, and check the route from the road to the bays. The government's 2025 announcement allows larger charging hubs to be signposted from major A-roads [S5]. It does not establish eligibility for every business. Confirm access, opening hours and listing ownership before promotion. Checked October 2026.

How can you add EV charging to Google Maps?

Start with an audit of what a visitor can already see. Search for your business and the charger location, then open the directions. Check that the route reaches the entrance customers can actually use. Keep a note of missing entries and errors before requesting changes. Use the Grays charging assessment to frame a local map audit alongside a physical survey.

For Google Business Profile, review the category called Electric vehicle charging station if it appears in your category selector and accurately describes the charging operation. Google requires selection from the categories offered; you cannot invent one. Keep your main business category accurate and agree listing ownership with the charging operator before adding anything. [S1]

Use this preparation checklist:

  • Confirm whether an operator already manages a charger entry at your address.
  • Agree who controls the listing and who requests corrections.
  • Record the actual customer entrance, including any gate or one-way approach.
  • Match the name and location to what someone will see on arrival.
  • Recheck the public result after an edit is reviewed. [S6]

Decide who may use the bays first. A public map entry should not create an invitation your access arrangements cannot support. Use public versus private chargepoints to frame that decision with your operator.

Which charging details and attributes should you check?

In Business Profile, open Edit profile, then More, to review available attributes. Google says availability depends on location and business category. Complete the relevant options you can substantiate; do not assume every profile offers the same EV controls. [S2]

Google Maps also lets users suggest changes to connector details for some charging stations. If you cannot see that option, check with whoever manages the entry rather than guessing from photographs. [S6]

Prepare a shared information sheet containing:

  • Connector types and the equipment description supplied by your installer.
  • Charging power in kilowatts (kW), describing the equipment rather than promising a vehicle’s charging speed.
  • Charging prices per kilowatt-hour (kWh), a unit of energy, and any separate parking charge.
  • Access hours, guest-only restrictions and whether a barrier must be opened.
  • The walking route to your entrance and the facilities actually available.
  • A support contact agreed with the operator.

Treat this as the information to reconcile across channels, not a list of fields every map accepts. Keep access restrictions visible in your own visitor information as well. Include fault communication in the arrangements described in who fixes a broken charger.

What should you do if your charger is missing from Zapmap?

Ask your operator about its data feed first. Zapmap says it receives direct live feeds from most leading UK charging networks and relies on the supplied data for those partners. It does not act on user suggestions for those networks. Ask the operator to correct its source record and confirm when the change is visible. [S3]

For a charger outside those live-data partnerships, Zapmap’s route is Settings, Add a charge point, then Add public charge point in its app. For existing entries, its current help page describes Suggest edit. Companies can also use its chargepoint form. [S3]

Before requesting an addition, compare the map with the site information sheet. Check whether a different entrance or nearby address explains an apparent duplicate. Keep responsibility for tariff and access updates in your chargepoint host agreement.

How do you add a location to Open Charge Map?

Search the map before adding a location. The service’s community FAQ describes Add Location in the menu and an Edit route for an existing entry. It also explains that submissions enter a review queue. [S4]

Prepare the location, access conditions and equipment information together. Position the marker at the charging location and use the description to explain how to reach it. After submission, keep the reference and compare the public result with your notes. Do not describe a submitted entry as published until it appears.

Assign an owner for later corrections. A useful listing must still be accurate after your opening hours, parking arrangements or charging equipment change. Include those tasks in your operating handover rather than treating the initial addition as the end of the job.

What did the EV road-sign changes allow?

The government’s announcement of 13 July 2025 says:

“immediate changes will allow larger EV charging hubs to be signposted from major A-roads for the first time.” [S5]

That wording concerns larger hubs. It does not give every pub, shop or hotel permission to put up a highway direction sign. Do not confuse this announcement with permission for a sign at your entrance or within your car park. Ask the relevant highway authority to confirm eligibility and the approval route for the road concerned. Check with your solicitor if the permissions remain unclear.

Prepare a plan showing the approach, entrance and internal route. For your own site review, check that a driver can recognise the correct turn and find the bays without stopping in a delivery lane. Make parking conditions readable before a visitor commits to using a bay. Address conflicts through the blocked-bay guide.

What should you do next?

Rehearse the whole arrival: search, directions, entrance, bay, payment instructions and support contact. Compare each stage with your shared information sheet. Allocate corrections to a named person and check the public results after review. Promotion should follow that check; no listing method establishes a forecast for visits or charging income.

Common questions

How long does a new Zapmap listing take?

Zapmap says additions typically take two to four weeks and may take longer during busy periods [S3]. Keep the submission reference and check the public listing before announcing that it is visible.

Can a charging map show whether a bay is free now?

Zapmap receives live availability feeds from many networks [S3]. Open Charge Map's community FAQ says its equipment status is not live [S4]. Check what the particular listing shows before advertising availability.

Can you add photographs to Open Charge Map?

Its FAQ directs users to the location's Photos tab and Add Photo [S4]. Prepare an entrance photograph and a bay photograph that help a visitor recognise the correct arrival route.

Why has an Open Charge Map edit not appeared?

Its FAQ says edits enter an approval queue [S4]. Check the submission status and the public entry before submitting another version; keep a record of what still needs correction.

How do you correct an inaccurate Google Maps entrance?

Open the place, choose Suggest an edit and select Location [S6]. Provide the corrected position and supporting information. Google reviews edits, so check the public result rather than assuming acceptance.

Should a cafe change its main Google category to charging?

Google says your primary category should describe the business, with additional categories used selectively [S1]. Keep the cafe accurately described and agree who manages any separate charging listing.
