How much does battery storage cost for your business?

Business battery storage needs a site-specific installed price, including power conversion, controls, connection and safety work. UK Power Networks provides an application route for solar or storage equipment from 5 kW to 50 kW [S1]. Compare usable energy and discharge power, then test the tariff spread after losses and annual costs. Checked October 2026.

How much does battery storage for business cost?

Ask for an installed cost tied to your actual load profile. We have not verified an official small-commercial installed price range suitable for every site, so the figures below are explicit modelling assumptions. They are not a statement of current market prices.

Price the whole project rather than multiplying a battery catalogue price by your desired capacity. UK Power Networks says it reviews commercial solar and storage requests and identifies whether network work is required before connection [S1]. That makes connection scope a quotation item, not an automatic inclusion.

Quote item What to request
Battery Usable energy, operating limits and capacity warranty
Power conversion Continuous charge and discharge output
Controls Metering, tariff scheduling and remote access
Site work Foundations, protection, cabling and access
Connection Application, studies and any network work
Ongoing costs Monitoring, maintenance, insurance and replacement

Compare a battery-only quotation with a solar and battery project. Keep the incremental battery cost visible. Otherwise solar’s contribution can make an uneconomic battery appear attractive.

What does battery storage cost per kWh tell you?

A kilowatt (kW) measures power; a kilowatt hour (kWh) measures energy. For an assumed 100 kWh of usable energy and 50 kW continuous output, ideal discharge time is 100 ÷ 50 = two hours. Reserve settings, auxiliary consumption and operating limits can reduce what your site receives.

Divide total installed cost by usable capacity to compare offers with equivalent scope. An assumed £40,000–£60,000 installation with 100 kWh usable capacity gives £400–£600 per usable kWh. This is arithmetic for the illustration, not a sourced market range.

Also compare installed cost per kW of discharge power. A system with enough energy but too little output may not cover a short demand peak. Conversely, high output has little value if your load cannot use it. Ask for a replay of your meter data, with simultaneous charger demand included.

Read peak shaving with batteries before accepting an income estimate based only on installed capacity.

Is battery storage worth it for your site?

Use this illustration, not a quote to test tariff shifting. All numerical inputs are assumptions. They exclude solar generation, export income and grid-service payments, so no income stream is counted twice.

Assumption Value
Usable battery; continuous discharge power 100 kWh; 50 kW
Low/mid/high equivalent full cycles per year 150 / 250 / 330
Avoided import price; charging price £0.30/kWh; £0.12/kWh
Round-trip efficiency 90%
Annual maintenance and software £600
Installed capital range, excluding VAT £40,000–£60,000
Part funded host capital; net benefit share 50%; 60%
Fully funded annual host rent assumption £500–£1,000

An equivalent full cycle means 100 kWh discharged in this example, even if split over several partial cycles. Delivered energy = 100 × cycles. Purchased charging energy = delivered energy ÷ 0.90.

Net annual operating benefit = delivered energy × £0.30 − (delivered energy ÷ 0.90 × £0.12) − £600.

Self funded result Low Mid High
Delivered kWh/year 15,000 25,000 33,000
Net benefit/year £1,900 £3,567 £4,900
Simple ROI 3.2–4.8% 5.9–8.9% 8.2–12.3%
Payback, years 21.1–31.6 11.2–16.8 8.2–12.2

Part funded assumes the provider funds half the installation and takes the remaining net benefit.

Part funded result Low Mid High
Host net benefit/year £1,140 £2,140 £2,940
Simple ROI 3.8–5.7% 7.1–10.7% 9.8–14.7%
Payback, years 17.5–26.3 9.3–14.0 6.8–10.2

ROI = annual host benefit ÷ host capital × 100. Payback = host capital ÷ annual host benefit. Calculate with unrounded values. These benefits are avoided electricity expenditure, not customer sales income.

Under the fully funded assumption, your contractual income is £500–£1,000 a year, with the provider bearing operating costs and retaining the energy benefit. That rent is invented solely as a scenario input, not an available offer; do not add the electricity benefit to your rent without a contract allocating both.

Long paybacks may exceed equipment warranty or economic life. The model excludes degradation, finance, tax, replacement, connection upgrades, insurance and downtime. Add those costs and test your own operating life before drawing a conclusion.

Which funding model works for battery storage?

Fully funded means the provider pays for, owns and operates the equipment. Your return must be defined as rent or a contractual share of value. Do not import a charger sales percentage into a battery agreement.

Part funded shares the upfront cost and allocates operating benefits by contract. Self funded puts the capital and operating risk with your business. Compare ownership, metering, control rights, buy-out terms and removal costs alongside the headline return. Read solar and battery ROI.

Ask what happens if your business changes tariff, moves premises or installs more chargers. Confirm whether the provider can discharge the battery when your site needs it. Have your solicitor review access, liability and exit terms, including any landlord and lender consent.

Are battery storage grants available?

Do not include a general national commercial battery grant in your base case without finding an open scheme, checking the project scope and obtaining approval. This guide has not verified one applicable to every business.

Export payments are different from installation grants. Ofgem’s Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) guidance covers eligible low-carbon generation; a battery alone is not one of the listed generation technologies [S4]. For solar charging, compare avoided import costs with the export income you give up. Check supplier rules for mixed grid-charged and solar-charged energy.

What must your site survey resolve?

Your distribution network operator (DNO) manages the local network. G99 is the engineering standard for connecting relevant generation equipment alongside that network and also applies to relevant storage installations [S2]. Ask the installer to coordinate solar, storage and charging applications rather than assessing each in isolation.

HSE identifies risk assessment and electrical safety responsibilities for battery projects and directs planning questions to the local authority [S3]. Use battery storage fire safety to prepare questions about location, emergency access and maintenance. Check legal responsibilities with your solicitor.

What should you do next?

Gather interval electricity data, current import and export tariffs, existing solar details and the proposed location. Then get matched with an installer that covers your area for a comparison of defined scopes.

Common questions

Can you apply the price of a domestic battery to a business installation?

Compare the installed scope first. UK Power Networks reviews commercial solar and storage connections and identifies required network work [S1]. A product-only domestic price does not include that site-specific assessment.

Does battery storage need G99 approval?

G99 is the generation connection standard covering relevant generation and storage operating alongside the network [S2]. Your installer should identify the applicable route and submit the equipment details to your network operator.

Who decides whether the battery needs planning permission?

HSE directs battery storage developers to the local planning authority [S3]. Contact your council with the location, equipment layout and project description; check the legal position with your solicitor.

Can exported solar electricity earn a payment instead of being stored?

The Smart Export Guarantee covers eligible solar generation up to 5 MW [S4]. Obtain the applicable export tariff and compare that income with the net value of storing the same energy.

Should a battery quote include a safety assessment?

Yes. HSE identifies duties to assess and manage battery storage risks [S3]. Ask for the proposed assessment scope, emergency access and responsibilities before accepting a layout; grid-scale guidance is not a small-system design specification.
