What is ad hoc EV charging?
Ad hoc charging lets a driver recharge without a pre-existing contract with the charging operator or electricity supplier [S1]. It is about access, not a special charging speed or a free session. Regulation 5 defines that access requirement [S1]. For your public site, specify a usable one-off payment route alongside any account options. Checked October 2026.
What does ad hoc charging mean?
Ad hoc charging is the ability to recharge without a pre-existing contract with the operator or electricity supplier. That is the access definition in the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulations [S1].
For your public site, think of a visitor arriving without an account for your chargers. Ask the operator to demonstrate the journey from finding the price to starting, stopping and paying for a session. Read public and private chargepoints before deciding your user groups.
How much does a one-off session cost?
The access method does not set the tariff. For an illustration, not a quote, assume a visitor buys 20 kilowatt-hours (kWh, a measure of energy) at 60p per kWh. Electricity costs 20 × £0.60 = £12. The assumed tariff is not a market benchmark.
Ask the operator to show any separate parking or overstay charges before a driver starts. The public charging rules require the charging price to be clear in pence per kWh [S2]. Keep the charging payment journey and your parking instructions consistent.
Do public chargers need a credit card terminal?
Ad hoc access and contactless payment are separate requirements. The public charging regulations specify contactless coverage according to power and deployment date [S2]. Do not approve a proposal merely because it includes a QR sticker or an app.
Request a compliance schedule for the exact equipment and a demonstration of the payment method. Ask who investigates failed sessions, deals with refunds and replaces damaged payment signage. Check the scope with your solicitor.
Read contactless payment and the public charging rules checklist. Ask your operator to test the arrival-to-payment flow before you advertise the bays as open.

Common questions
Does ad hoc mean the charging session is free?
No. The definition concerns access without a pre-existing contract. It does not require a zero price for electricity [S1].
Is ad hoc access the same as roaming?
No. Ad hoc access avoids a pre-existing operator contract. Payment roaming lets a driver use an account through another service; the public charging regulations treat roaming separately [S1], [S2].
Can a QR code replace a required contactless terminal?
No. Where regulation 5 requires contactless payment, a web payment link alone does not fulfil that requirement. Ask the operator to demonstrate the qualifying payment method [S2]; check scope with your solicitor.
