What is a BESS?
BESS means battery energy storage system. It stores electricity for use later, rather than producing a fresh supply of energy [S1], [S2]. Ask for both its power rating and usable energy capacity: a 100 kWh usable battery supplying an assumed 50 kW load would last two hours before allowing for losses. Checked October 2026.
What does a BESS system do?
A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electricity so it can be used later. Batteries are one form of electricity storage; the government describes applications at businesses as well as larger facilities [S1], [S2].
For your site, start with the task you want it to perform. That might mean shifting electricity use in time or supporting charging demand. Ask the designer to show when the battery charges, when it discharges and what remains supplied by the grid. Read why businesses install batteries.
How do battery power and capacity differ?
Kilowatts (kW) measure power: the rate at which electricity is supplied. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy. Ask for usable energy, the permitted operating range and the power available continuously, rather than comparing cabinet sizes.
An illustration, not a quote: assume a battery has 100 kWh usable energy and supplies a steady 50 kW load. Ideal duration = 100 ÷ 50 = 2 hours. Losses, reserve settings and equipment limits can reduce the delivered duration. These are assumed figures, not a product specification.
Use the commercial battery sizing guide to prepare the demand information an installer needs.
What does a BESS project mean for your site?
Ask for a plan showing location, electrical works, emergency access, monitoring and maintenance. Government storage safety guidance brings together standards relevant across the lifecycle of larger systems [S3]. Confirm which requirements apply to your proposal with the designer, insurer and council.
Compare the battery proposal against your actual electricity-use pattern. Ask for an assessment of losses and replacement assumptions before accepting a financial projection. If backup matters, require an explicit list of protected loads and outage behaviour rather than relying on the word storage. Read battery fire safety alongside the technical proposal.

Common questions
Does a BESS generate electricity?
It stores energy for subsequent use. The government definition distinguishes storage as shifting when electricity is used; it is not a new fuel source [S2].
Is a BESS automatically a backup supply?
Do not assume that. Ask the designer to specify outage operation, protected loads and isolation. Storage safety guidance addresses system design across the project lifecycle [S3].
Is a battery container the whole project?
No. Request a scope covering the electrical connection, controls and safety arrangements as well as batteries. Government guidance addresses storage systems through design, deployment and operation [S3].
